Other makes and models are available .... however, it was Olympus who offered us a free demonstration of their range of mirrorless compact system cameras and lenses and we were very pleased to welcome Clare Harvey-May and her carful of goodies from the Olympus Team, based in Southend. Whatever camera system you use, there is always something to learn by comparing the feel and look of other gear and no-one was holding back last night. Clare provided enough camera bodies and spare cards so that we could actually shoot images with different combinations of cameras and lenses, whilst hearing about the innovative features of the newest additions.
Along the way, we learned Clare’s own story, too - from entering the industry at 16 and becoming a print management specialist, to designing dark rooms, some time as a freelance photographer, to working for Olympus, she brought to the evening that level of experience and expertise, combined with a relaxed style of delivery and engaging personality which makes for a great evening.
In the first half, we heard about the latest technical developments at Olympus and how new features can be offered through firmware updates to cameras and lenses: focus stacking, live composite images, high resolution mode etc. and Clare ran through the history and features of the current range and how the licence agreement with Panasonic means there is a very wide choice of lenses available.
After the break, we had a live demonstration of one of the new features: Pro-Capture, with the camera beginning to take frames even before the button is fully pressed - and then recording an impressive burst of images - 40 per second. Even more impressive was Clare’s setup of bucket, glass, paddling pool and jugs which meant we could all have a go at dropping things into the glass of water and capturing the resultant splash. It was great fun - very apposite, considering ‘FUN’ is the new theme of our Flickr competition this month! many thanks to Clare and to the Olympus Team. Thanks too for any comments and feedback you would like to leave below.
