Rob went into the army as a photographer and had eight years working in conflict areas around the world. Returning to London, he started shooting for stars like Tom Cruise and Brian May, whilst his wedding business grew and grew. He now shoots 38 weddings a year and 10 of those are international events. He swapped to Olympus kit because of the lighter load became an ambassador for Olympus UK, getting to try out lenses and cameras before they are generally available. Whilst showing us examples of his images from weddings and Street shoots, Rob shared advice on the techniques and settings he uses and, even more helpfully, why. His tip is to handhold only the equivalent shutter speed to the length of your lens. He talked about when to expose for shadows and when for highlights, how to successfully pan to get an impression of speed, which plug-ins for LightRoom he finds helpful and how he balances ambient and speed lights. He explained why he doesn’t recompose after half-pressing the shutter, preferring to move his focus point around on the screen, especially at wide apertures. He tries to get 90% right in camera.
Rob finished the evening with a description of his month long project planned for next year: a walk across the breadth of India, photographing as he goes. We will be following him - from a safe distance and we wish him luck!
