Our second competition of the new 2025 internal season took place on Tuesday 3rd June, with many members making it to the Hall and a few on Zoom. This round had a 'Home' theme, which was broadly interpreted, and the judge was Aisling Keavey, making a welcome return visit to the Society after her talk earlier in the year.
Our Chairman, Nick Bowman, introduced Aisling and then the competition began.
Print Competition
Twelve members presented prints in the first half of the evening.
Aisling made several complimentary remarks regarding composition but pointed out where a judicious crop might have enhanced an image. Aisling acknowledged that the occasional distracting item could be removed or retained, depending on the photographer's personal aesthetic.
Seven images were awarded 19's and 20's in the print category. The maximum 20 points were awarded to 'Neon St Paul's' by Dan Waller and 'Home Memories Linger' by Deborah Smyth:
Dan Waller - 'Neon St Paul's (20)

Deborah Smyth - 'Home memories linger' (20)

DPI Competition
Twenty-one members entered the DPI competition in the second half of the evening.
Aisling suggested a few might benefit from dodging & burning to better direct the viewer's eye. Again, Aisling remarked on some successful compositions and some interesting subject choices.
Fourteen images were awarded the two highest scores, with five images awarded the maximum 20 points. They were 'At home with the ghosts in the garden' (20) by Sarah Cartwright; 'Bedroom at dawn' (20) by Brendan Barnes; 'Submariner's Home' (20) by Colin Page; 'Status Symbols - Village Leader's Home, Yunnan' (20) by Rob Wilkinson; and 'Now and Then' (20) by Matthew Taylor:
