It's been quite a few years since food photography professionals Wendy Sweetser and Tony Robins first came along to judge our efforts at food photography. This time, joined by their colleague -Diane Patrice, they recognised a much higher standard in the entries. Maybe that was a result of the workshop they ran for us in February bu,t even so, the marks they awarded were conservative but they were accompanied by really constructive commentary about the styling, composition, lighting and composition of individual entries. Several entries did not match the brief -being product shots rather than food- but our judges enjoyed the creative thinking behind many of the other images.
In particular, they admired the DPI "Egg Royale" by Clare Halas -in terms of very good composition & lighting, focus in the right place and and looking very tasty. They awarded it the highest mark of the evening [20/20] but it was closely followed by "Marene Oyster" by Paul Shelley [19/20] which they found very fresh looking, colourful and with a great background. in the Print section, the highest marks [18/20] went to Greg Lambert and Susi Luard. Greg's use of action and composition in "Pancakes" was acknowledged while Susi's image "Tiramisu" -made with an iPhone- was praised for it's natural look and use of contrast.
